Abu Dhabi's Bold AI Leap with A171: A New Challenger to OpenAI
Abu Dhabi has marked its territory in the global AI landscape with the launch of A171, a state-of-the-art AI company set to rival major players like OpenAI. This strategic move, orchestrated by the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), showcases the UAE's commitment to becoming a frontrunner in AI innovation.
A171 is set to commercialize the Falcon large language model (LLM), a brainchild of the Technology Innovation Institute's (TII) extensive R&D in AI. The company debuts with three specialized platforms - LAW71, RAZI71, and ASK71, each targeting different sectors, with more to follow.
VentureOne, ATRC's technology commercialization arm, played a crucial role in A171's inception, further cementing Abu Dhabi’s ambitious stance in the AI arena.
This development is part of the UAE's broader strategy to lead in AI, as seen with TII's Falcon 180B LLM and G42's advancements. Moreover, Core42's launch of Jais 30B, an open-source Arabic LLM, underscores the UAE's focus on regional AI capabilities.
A171's emergence as a potential rival to established entities like OpenAI signifies Abu Dhabi's serious intent to not just participate, but lead in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.

Amazon's Chip Innovation: Boosting AI Model Training and Running
Amazon is stepping up its game in the AI chip market with the introduction of two new chips at its re:Invent conference, aimed at enhancing model training and inferencing. This move comes amidst a growing GPU shortage, with Nvidia’s top chips sold out until 2024 and possibly beyond.
1. AWS Trainium2: The successor to the 2020 Trainium, Trainium2 boasts a 4x performance improvement and 2x better energy efficiency. Available in EC Trn2 instances, it can scale up to 100,000 chips in AWS' EC2 UltraCluster, offering a staggering 65 exaflops of compute. This translates to approximately 650 teraflops per chip, surpassing Google’s custom AI training chips from 2017. Trainium2's power means it can train a 300-billion parameter AI model in weeks instead of months, outperforming models like OpenAI’s GPT-3.
2. Arm-based Graviton4: Focused on inferencing, Graviton4 is the latest in Amazon’s Graviton chip series. It offers 30% better compute performance, 50% more cores, and 75% more memory bandwidth than Graviton3. Additionally, it features encrypted physical hardware interfaces for enhanced security. Graviton4 will be available in Amazon EC2 R8g instances, currently in preview with a general launch expected soon.
These developments signify Amazon's commitment to reducing dependence on external GPU suppliers and advancing its capabilities in AI model creation and deployment. David Brown, AWS’s compute and networking VP, emphasized these chips' role in meeting the surging demand for generative AI, promising faster, cost-effective, and energy-efficient solutions. While the exact availability date for Trainium2 is yet to be announced, Graviton4’s preview phase indicates its imminent impact on the cloud computing landscape.
